In one of the quietest victories in the Drug War came with help from an unlikely source. The Public Health Service Review was lifted by the Obama administration in June1. Hopefully this will make actual scientific research more-wide spread. While such research does exist2, it will now be easier to conduct.
This move should lead to Marijuana being changed from a Class 1 substance, which means it has “no currently accepted medical use3” a category it shares with heroin, LSD, and ecstasy. The DEA must have the dullest office parties.
The helping hand belonged to the Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) a lobbying group associated with a history of opposing legalization. Why they have reversed their opinion recently remains unclear at this time. They did publish a .pdf4 a few weeks prior calling for the repeal of the Public Health Service Review. What if, any, influence this had on the administration’s decision is also unknown.
